What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy ?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure inside a hyperbaric chamber.   This approach aims to increase oxygen concentration in the blood and tissues, leading to a range of physiological effects that promote tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall health.   Studies provide compelling evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of HBOT in promoting tissue healing,  reducing inflammation, and improving outcomes across a range of medical conditions.

Treatable Conditions: Wound Healing, Decompression Sickness, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, Neurological Conditions, Weightloss, Autism Spectrum Support, Sports Injuries, Inflammatory Conditions, Vision Disorders, Dental Procedures, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Skin Rejuvenation, Lyme Disease, Tinnitus

Depending on what condition is being treated, a series of sessions will be recommended by our Nurse Practitioner.

The mechanism of action of HBOT is multifaceted and involves several key physiological processes:

Hyperoxygenation: Breathing pure oxygen at increased pressure allows for greater oxygen solubility in the bloodstream, resulting in higher arterial oxygen tension and increased oxygen delivery to tissues. This hyperoxygenation promotes oxygen diffusion into cells and tissues, enhancing cellular metabolism and energy production.

Angiogenesis: HBOT stimulates new blood vessels creation (angiogenesis) in

areas with compromised blood flow or tissue damage. Increased oxygen

availability promotes the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells,

forming functional capillary networks, improved tissue perfusion and

oxygenation.

Anti-inflammatory Effects: HBOT has anti-inflammatory properties that help

mitigate inflammatory responses and tissue damage. High oxygen levels in

the bloodstream suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhance the activity of anti-inflammatory mediators.

Oxygen Radical Scavenging: Oxygen at high concentrations can act as a scavenger for reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals; byproducts of

cellular metabolism which contribute to oxidative stress and tissue damage.

HBOT helps protect cells and tissues from oxidative damage by promoting

this cellular repair mechanism.

Frequently asked Questions

What do I wear inside?

We have robes available for your usage.  You can also go in fully clothed and without shoes.

What can I bring into the HBOT?

The chamber is pressurized with 100% oxygen, so no lighters are allowed. You can bring in your cellphone, but to receive the full effects of neurological benefits, we recommend to just relax and meditate.

How large is the chamber?

Our Chamber is large enough for two people.  It is also big enough to do resistance exercises, leg lifts, pilates once inside to receive maximum metabolism benefits and maximum calories burned.

How many calories are burned in one session?

You can burn up to 700 calories in a 1 Hr session.

What are the side effects of HBOT?

As with any treatment, side effects are possible. With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, however, they are minimal. HBOT has been proven to be extremely safe, and the actual number of side effects are very small. The most common problem is barotrauma to the ears and sinuses caused by pressure changes, similar to what you would experience in an ascending or descending airplane. We will teach you auto-inflationary techniques that promote adequate clearing of the ears during treatment.

What does HBOT feel like?

At the start of the treatment session, oxygen immediately begins to circulate and the pressure gradually increase. The patient will generally start to feel a fullness sensation in the ears, similar to ascending or descending in an airplane. This fullness should only last about 10-15 minutes and an experienced HMS hyperbaric technician will guide the patient to relieve any ear pressure. Once treatment pressure is reached, patients relax and just breathe normally. Near the end of the treatment session, the hyperbaric technician will gradually decrease the pressure in the chamber, a process that lasts about 5 minutes. During this decompression stage, it is common for patients to experience a slight popping sensation in the ears as a result of the change in pressure.
